My grandson, he came back from the big city, told me about this thing, whatchamacallit, small lift. Said it helps folks get around, especially when the old bones start to creak. I said, “Boy, what you talking about, a lift? We used to lift hay bales bigger than you!” He laughed, bless his heart. He’s a good boy. But these small lifts, they ain’t for hay, they’re for people, like a personal elevator, he says. I guess, if you got the money, and your old legs is starting to bother you, it could be worth it. But it sounds like a fancy thing to me.
He showed me pictures on his fancy phone. Little boxes, they are, going up and down. Like magic, I tell ya! Now, back in my day, we just used the stairs. Up and down, up and down. Good exercise, that was. Kept us strong. But these days, everything’s got to be easy, I guess. People don’t want to walk no more. They want these small lifts to carry them everywhere. We call it an elevator at home, but my grandson called it a lift.
He says some folks put them in their houses, these small home lifts. Imagine that! A lift right inside your house! We used to have an outhouse, that’s what we had. But times is changing. Folks got money to spend on these things now, I reckon. But I still can’t believe that some people may install a small elevator at home, is that really necessary?
These small lifts, they ain’t cheap, though. My grandson, he was telling me the numbers. Made my head spin! Thousands of dollars! For a little box that goes up and down! We could have bought a whole herd of cows for that kind of money back in the day. Or maybe a new truck. A small one. They ain’t got big trucks like they used to.
- He said the cheapest ones are like twenty thousand dollars.
- And the fancy ones, oh boy, they can go up to forty thousand.
- Maybe even more if you need special stuff.
For that price, you could build a whole new room! Or buy a lot of groceries. Or get one of them fancy new TVs everyone’s talking about. Although I like my old one just fine. Works good enough for me.
But for these home lifts, you got to get people to put them in for you. It ain’t like putting up a fence. You need special folks who know what they’re doing. And that costs money, too. I guess a lot of money. My grandson didn’t say how much, but I bet it ain’t cheap. These things never are. I still remember I spent a lot of money to repair my old truck that year, and that is a small one.
And then there are these lifts for things, not just people. Like a goods lift, they call it. For moving heavy stuff around. Like in a store or something. We used to just carry things. Strong backs, we had. But I guess nowadays, folks need machines to do everything for them. These goods lifts cost a fortune too. He mentioned some numbers, but they all sounded big to me.
- Ten thousand, he said.
- Maybe even twenty-five thousand.
- Depends on how big and strong you need it to be.
I still think that is a lot of money. What a waste! Imagine that money you can save!
So, these small lifts, they’re a thing now, I guess. For folks who got the money and don’t want to walk. Me, I’ll stick to the stairs. Good exercise, keeps you young. And it’s free! Can’t beat that, can you? I know I am old, but I can still work as well as the young men.
But I guess if you really need one, and you got the money burning a hole in your pocket, then maybe it’s worth it. Just seems like a lot of fuss to me. And a lot of money. But what do I know? I’m just an old lady. I don’t know much about these fancy things. Just seems like back in my day, we did just fine without them. We worked hard, and we didn’t need no fancy small lift to get around. We just used our own two feet. And that’s good enough for me.
But hey, if you want a small lift, you go right ahead. Just remember what I said about the stairs. They are free!
