Well, let’s gab a bit about this here “lift shaft size” thing. Don’t rightly know why ya wanna know, but I’ll tell ya what I can. It ain’t rocket science, ya know.

What’s a Lift Shaft Anyway?

How Big Should It Be?

Well, that there depends. Like most things, it ain’t one-size-fits-all. Some lifts are for big buildings, like them fancy stores downtown. Some are for just regular houses, where folks can’t climb stairs so good no more.

• Big Lifts, Big Shafts: For them big commercial buildings, where lots of people gotta ride at once, the shaft gotta be bigger. I heard tell they can be somethin’ like 5 feet by 4 feet, all the way up to 6 feet by 7 feet! That’s a whole lotta space, enough to fit a whole family and their groceries, I reckon. They gotta be big enough for wheelchairs and stuff, too. Gotta think of everyone, ya know.
• Little Lifts, Little Shafts: Now, for your house, if you got bad knees or somethin’, you don’t need nothin’ that big. A smaller one, maybe around 40 inches by 48 inches, that’s plenty. Just enough for you and maybe another person, or a bag of feed, ha!

Making Sure it Fits Just Right

Now, how you figure out the exact size? Well, that’s where them smarty-pants engineers come in. They got all sorts of charts and numbers and whatnot. They measure the “lift car floor size,” that’s the inside part where you stand, and then they add some extra space all around for the machinery and the walls and stuff.

I heard tell you gotta think about the doors, too. Them doors need space to open and close, ya see. And there’s different kinds of doors, some with frames, some without. It all adds up. Them fellas with the pencils, they gotta measure the door frame width, the shaft wall width… all sorts of things. It’s enough to make your head spin!

Rules and Regulations

And you can’t just go buildin’ any ol’ size you want, neither. There’s rules, ya know. Government rules, city rules, all sorts of rules. They gotta make sure the lift is safe for everyone. Especially for them folks in wheelchairs, they gotta make sure the lift is big enough and easy to get in and out of. So, the fellas building these things, they gotta follow the rules. Or else they’ll be in a heap of trouble, I tell ya!

Getting it Right from the Start

Them elevator companies, they usually give the builders special drawings, like blueprints. These drawings show exactly how big the shaft needs to be, down to the last inch. It’s important to get it right the first time, cause fixing a mistake later on? That’s a whole lotta work and money, I’ll tell ya that much.

Picking the Right Floor Size

Now, before you even start building the shaft, you gotta decide how big you want the elevator floor to be. Like, do you want a square one or a rectangle one? And how big? Maybe somewhere between 900mm and 1400mm? You pick what you want, and then you add some extra space to figure out the shaft size.

A Good Size for Most Folks

For a regular elevator, not too big, not too small, just right for maybe four people, or about 300 kilograms, a good size for the inside would be about 1100mm wide and 700mm deep. And for the shaft? Well, you’d need something like 1500mm by 1300mm. That’s what I heard, anyways. Seems about right, though. Enough room to move around, but not so big that it takes up the whole house.

Minimum Size, Just in Case

And if you’re really tight on space, the smallest you should go is about 1219mm wide and 1524mm deep for the shaft. Anything smaller than that, and you might have problems. Might be too cramped, might not meet the rules.
